How Making Decisions Can Make the Difference Between Success and Struggle in Your Contracting Business

I recently held a peer group retreat in Chicago for five of my painting clients, where we worked on improving their businesses and their lives.
During the retreat, I read a short blog post about making decisions from my coach, Bill Baren and then we did a short activity using the ideas from the post. Everyone found the blog post and activity powerful and useful. So, I’d like to share it with you because I think you’ll find it valuable too.
Here’s Bill Baren’s blog post:
I love working with empowering mindsets that help people take big leaps in their business (and in their personal growth).
I want to share with you one of my favorite mindsets. (Or you can think of it as a mindset shift).
This is about how to make a commitment to something in your business.
Let’s say you want to launch a new program or go out and get 5 new clients.
How do you do this?
You make a DECISION.
Wow. That word just oozes power.
I’ve read that the word “decide” comes from the Latin word decisio, which means “to cut off”
Truly making the commitment is basically deciding to cut off any other possibility. There is no back door.
Take a look at a place in your business where you’re struggling. Have you made a real decision to having it resolved? Are you really committed enough to do what it takes?
If you haven’t made a decision, you have basically made an unconscious decision to continue to struggle.
So, if you’re struggling to take a big step forward in your business, it means you’re wavering or uncommitted about something important.
There may be an opportunity for you to make a decision to make a powerful commitment to something and to not look back. Or to decide to release a belief about yourself that is holding you back and that feels good to let go.
To decisions and commitment.
The sentence was that blew everyone in my peer group away was, “If you haven’t made a decision, you have basically made an unconscious decision to continue to struggle.“ It’s so true!
So, I asked each peer group member to take five minutes to list all the things in their business and life that they weren’t happy with, that they wanted to change or had been on their to-do list for a while, but they hadn’t resolved.
Each person had a long list, including weighty issues like poor relationships with a family member or spouse to more minor issues like getting pictures for the website. Big or small, the truth is that each of these unresolved items drains your energy.
Finally, I asked them to pick one item that will make the most significant difference in their business or life and make a decision to take it on and resolve it.
It’s only been a short time since the retreat, but I can tell you that making a decision has already had a significant impact on the folks in the peer group. One of my clients summed things up by saying, “I’ve been a victim. I’ve let people and problems hijack my time and energy. I have more control and can make a greater impact by making a decision and committing to resolving the important things in my business and life.”
I highly recommend that you do this activity ASAP!
