Try this Eye-opening Experience to Make Your Contracting Business Better

You’ve probably heard the saying, “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” Well, while I’m writing this blog post, I’m having some painting done in my house and having my laundry room remodeled, and it’s been an eye-opening experience for me.

As part of my coaching, I help my clients design a great experience for their customers, but I have to say that being a contracting customer has taken my awareness of what a good experience should be to a whole new level.

  • I found, for example, that the estimates I received were vague in places which made me wonder whether the price covered everything that we discussed. I wanted more details to make me feel confident that they included everything and to ease my concern about potential arguments we might have when they didn’t complete something I thought was included wasn’t on the estimate.
  • I also found that I wanted more information on the next steps throughout the process. I had to keep asking. I wanted my contractor to be proactive and act as my expert guide.

The next time that you need a contractor to do work around your house or business, I highly recommend that you get personally involved. Don’t let your spouse, partner or employee do it. You be the customer, so that you can experience from the customer’s point of view what it’s like. Treat it as market research. From the time you request an estimate until the work is finished, tune in and notice how the experience feels to you. What worked for you? What would you want to be different?

Compare the experience you have with your contractor to what you do with your customers. What did you learn? Did you get any new ideas that you can use in your business? Did you find areas that were lacking in how the contractor treated you as a customer? Are any of these also areas that you need to improve in how your treat your customers?

Try it!

Be the customer, the next time you use a contactor. I guarantee that by “walking a mile in their shoes” you’ll get insights that will help improve the experience that you give to your customers.
